There wasn’t a dry eye in the room after the mother, wife, sister and granddaughter of active and past military servicemen stood up to tell her story and thank Chick-fil-A for all they do in honor of our military. She became emotional after a coin presentation ceremony honoring a group of veterans after their visit to Chick-fil-A’s Home Office Backstage Tour.
Coin Presentations and How They Began
Chick-fil-A Foundation’s coin presentations were created to honor our military and veterans. The first coins were presented in late January 2016, after they were designed and minted in December 2015. Since then, Chick-fil-A has presented over 1,500 coins to active military and veterans.
An Emotional Day for Our Veterans and Staff
On the day of their visit the veterans completed the tour, exploring Chick-fil-A’s history, culture, values and Truett Cathy’s military background. At the end of the tour, Chick-fil-A staff presented each veteran with the custom coin and thanked them for all they’ve done for this country.
After the coin presentation, a woman also on the tour asked if she could say something. She stood up and addressed the group. As she began to speak, she started to cry. She finally collected herself well enough to manage the words, “I have never seen a more honorable tribute to our military. I commend you, Chick-fil-A, and these young men and women.”
She continued to tell the crowd how her grandfather had served in WWII, her husband in Korea and how she lost her brother in Vietnam. Now, her son was serving in Afghanistan. She spoke about how much this tributary ceremony meant to her, as she’d witnessed almost every man in her family ship off to serve our country, and even lost some of them in the wars they served.
She then admitted that she’d never shared this with anyone. Something was different about today, however, and the heartfelt coin presentation made her compelled to share her story and give thanks. Immediately after she told her story, Williams addressed her, saying, “Ma’am, although you are not technically a veteran, if anyone deserves to be honored with a coin, it’s you.”
As he exchanged the coin with her, they received a standing ovation from the room. As everyone in the crowd looked at each other, they noticed there was not a dry eye there.
This ceremony allowed fellow servicemen and women and spouses to experience a moment of true connection, gratitude and unity. This is the connection the Chick-fil-A Foundation and its staff strive for every day.
Thanks to all those who have served in our nation’s military. We honor you!
