More than 130 Chick-fil-A staff, restaurant Operators and community partners — including our 2018 True Inspiration Award winners — recently volunteered their bike-building skills to benefit eight Atlanta-area organizations. The volunteer event was part of Chick-fil-A’s annual Founder’s Day celebration, which honors the life and legacy of founder S. Truett Cathy, at the Atlanta Support Center office on Friday, May 18.
Over the course of two hours, volunteers divided into teams for some friendly competition to reach the Chick-fil-A Foundation’s goal of building 50 bikes for both adults and children. Hands on Atlanta and Bearings Bike Shop partnered with Chick-fil-A for the event, and the bikes were donated to:
- Families First
- Raising Expectations
- Chris 180
- Hollis Innovation Academy
- Nicholas House
- Hapeville Charter
- Salvation Army Bellwood Boys & Girls Club
- Bearings Bike
Janet Camp,a Chick-fil-A staff member who works in Field Development, was one of the volunteers. “Truett was a wonderful role model for helping others and giving back to the community,” Janet says. “He loved children and went out of his way to show them his love. It was very fitting to participate in a service project to help young people on Founder’s Day.”
Each of the eight community organizations will be using bikes in unique ways to best impact those they serve. Hapeville Charter, for example, will givethe bikes to the students who achieve the school’s annual awards like Most Improved, Best All Around and Honor Roll, while Families First will be giving the bikes to children in foster care and recently adopted children.
“It was a joy to be able to partner with Hands on Atlanta and Bearings Bike Shop to create such a fun, engaging, and meaningful service event,” says Dr. Charlotte Kelly, who leads the Team Chick-fil-A employee volunteerism program at Chick-fil-A. “We were thrilled to have our non-profit partners serve alongside Chick-fil-A staff to build bikes that will benefit the children and adults they serve.”
Thank you to everyone who was a part of this year’s Founders Day celebration and to those who helped us make a difference through the bike-building service event!
